Sony recently acquired the well-respected line of audio software from Sonic Foundry, including Sound Forge and the ACID line of looping tools. The rebranded Sound Forge is a top-notch digital audio editor and is even better than before.
Sound Forge runs under Windows XP or 2000. It will not work with other versions of Windows and a Mac version isn't offered. Sony recommends 128MB of RAM and a 400MHz processor, but as with all audio programs, the more hardware you can throw at it the better.

Unlike most audio editors, which cram dozens of windows and buttons onto the screen, Sound Forge sports an exceptionally clean-looking interface. Don't be deceived, though; Sound Forge is packed full of features.

New features added to Sound Forge 7 over version 6 include DirectX plug-in effects automation, a vinyl restoration plug-in, drag-and-drop CD extraction, and other tools. Version 6 had already added 32-bit/64-bit float/192kHz file support, fast nondestructive audio editing, multitask background rendering and enhanced time zoom (24:1) for accurate edits.

Sound Forge supports all popular audio formats, including Windows Media 9, RealMedia 9, QuickTime 6, MP3, WMV, PCA, AIF and others. You can also edit the audio portions of AVI and MPG video files, and burn music to a CD. There are special facilities included for creating ACID loops.

The only missing element is multitrack recording. For that, you need Sony's Vegas which edits both video and audio and can create 5.1 surround sound.
